This project involved the installation of four concrete manholes along an approximately 325-metre service route containing water, sewage and ducting services. The works included upgrading three existing open access points, constructing one new manhole, connecting existing services and reinstating the surrounding ground areas.
The completed manholes provide improved access to the service route, helping support future inspection, maintenance and repair works.

The Situation
The service route contained existing water, sewage and ducting services running along approximately 325 metres of ground. Several existing access points required upgrading to provide more suitable access for future maintenance and servicing.
The client required four concrete manholes to be installed along the route, including three upgraded existing access points and one new manhole.
The works also required the existing services to be connected through the new manhole structures, with the surrounding ground reinstated following completion.


The Challenge

The works required careful planning and accurate construction to ensure the new manholes could accommodate the existing services while providing suitable access for future maintenance.


Our Approach
We began by locating and exposing the existing water, sewage and ducting services where required. Fencing, barriers and other obstructions surrounding the proposed manhole locations were removed to provide suitable working areas.
The three existing open access points were then prepared for upgrading, with a fourth location selected for the installation of a new manhole.
Concrete bases were prepared and installed at each location before the precast circular concrete manhole chambers were positioned. The chambers were approximately 1.2 metres in diameter, providing a suitable structure for the service connections and future access requirements.

Openings were carefully cut or core drilled within the manhole chambers to accommodate the existing and new service entries. The water, sewage and ducting services were then connected and routed through the new manhole structures as required.
Once the manholes and service connections had been completed, suitable materials were used to backfill around the structures. The surrounding ground was compacted to provide a stable finish and reduce the risk of settlement.
The access covers were installed to all four manholes, allowing future inspection, maintenance and repair works to be carried out.
Finally, the disturbed ground areas surrounding each manhole were reinstated and landscaped, leaving the service route tidy and ready for continued use.
Any required service interruptions were coordinated with the client, with planned shutdowns arranged and adequate notice provided before connection works commenced.

By installing suitable concrete chambers and connecting the services through the new manholes, the project provided a more practical arrangement for future inspection, maintenance and repair works.
The reinstatement of the surrounding ground also helped return the affected areas to a clean and usable condition following the construction works.
