Ditch Excavation & Ground Levelling

This project involved ditch excavation and ground levelling along a site access road used by both commercial vehicles and farm machinery.

The aim was to improve drainage, prevent surface water crossing the track, and protect the road from ongoing erosion.

The Situation

This access road is used daily for vehicle parking for a local gym, as well as farm traffic and machinery moving to the main site area.

During periods of heavy rain, surface water was running across the road and parking. The existing ditch alongside the track was too shallow to manage the volume of water.

As a result, water was flowing over the gravel surface and causing erosion, washing material away and damaging the access route.

During & After Work Complete:

The Challenge

  • Water crossing the road instead of being captured
  • Ongoing loss of gravel from the surface
  • Risk of further erosion and deterioration
  • A working access route that needed to remain usable

The solution needed to improve drainage without overcomplicating the site.

Our Approach

We used an excavator (8-ton Caterpillar Excavator 308 Excavator) with a bucket attachment to carry out the works.

The existing ditch was carefully excavated and deepened to improve water flow and capacity.
Ground levels along the edge of the road were adjusted to help direct surface water back into the ditch.

All work was carried out with care to maintain access and minimise disruption to site use.

The Result

  • Surface water now drains into the ditch, not across the road
  • Reduced erosion and loss of gravel
  • Improved longevity of the access track
  • A cleaner, more functional site layout

The road was left level, tidy, and ready for continued daily use.

The Outcome

A simple, practical drainage solution delivered efficiently. Client was happy and the site is now better protected against future water damage and ongoing maintenance issues.
